What Ronin left behind
It was a mitzvah wrapped in an enigma.
The enigma was: Who left the small metal box full of money in the lobby of the Bergen County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center in Teterboro?
The mitzvah, as the shelter staff learned the next day, belonged to Ronin, a four-and-a-half-year-old from Hackensack. Ronin, his mother told the staff, had been saving money from his birthday and holidays and wanted to donate it to help animals in need.
“Kudos to Ronin for this wonderful, unselfish act!” the center posted on its Facebook page, along with pictures of the box and its contents. That is to say, a PJ Library tzedakah box with the slogan, “I love sharing!” and several low denomination bills.
In the comments, Ronin’s mother revealed the full story: “That’s my kiddo! He is in love with the two cats we adopted Saturday and is so happy that the money he saved will be able to help the animals we couldn’t bring home! Thanks for all you do!”
