Annual sports night coming to Tenafly May 2

The New Jersey Jewish Sports Hall of Fame is the official body honoring Jewish athletes and others in the world of sports in and around New Jersey. On May 2, Kenny Albert of Closter, a four-sport and Emmy Award-nominated announcer; Tracy Wolfson of Tenafly, a five-time Emmy-nominated CBS sportscaster; Yael Averbuch West of Montclair, a former professional soccer player, and Jeff Bukantz of Montville, president of Maccabi USA, will be inducted into the Hall of Fame. Bob Papa, the voice of the New York Giants, will interview Eli Manning, a two-time Super Bowl MVP. The induction ceremony is held in conjunction with the Kaplen JCC on the Palisades’ annual Sports Night of Champions, when Joseph Taub Scholar Athlete Awards are presented to high school seniors from Bergen County. Separately, the Hall of Fame will award scholarships to the statewide New Jersey JCC scholar-athletes of the year. The celebratory program includes an elegant cocktail reception, live auction, and celebrity athlete appearances, at the JCC in Tenafly, on May 2, beginning at 6 p.m. The New Jersey Jewish Sports Hall of Fame (jerseyjewishsports.org) was founded in 2019 to honor Jews who have distinguished themselves in the field of athletics in the state of New Jersey.

The induction ceremony is held in conjunction with the Kaplen JCC on the Palisades’ annual Sports Night of Champions, when Joseph Taub Scholar Athlete Awards are presented to high school seniors from Bergen County. Separately, the Hall of Fame will award scholarships to the statewide New Jersey JCC scholar-athletes of the year. The celebratory program includes an elegant cocktail reception, live auction, and celebrity athlete appearances.

The New Jersey Jewish Sports Hall of Fame (jerseyjewishsports.org/) was founded in 2019 to honor Jews who have distinguished themselves in the field of athletics in the state of New Jersey.

“We are thrilled to honor four long-time New Jersey residents who have distinguished themselves in the field of athletics. Kenny Albert is the only current national sports broadcaster who has handled play-by-play for all four major sports leagues; Tracy Wolfson is the lead reporter for CBS Sports and has covered many Super Bowls and Final Fours for the network; Yael Averbuch West was a longtime member of the U.S. women’s national soccer team and is general manager of Gotham FC, the NY/NJ entry in the National Women’s Soccer League; and Jeff Bukantz, a two-time captain of the U.S. Olympic fencing team is the president of Maccabi USA,” said Daniel Zausner, who chairs the Hall of Fame Board of Governors.

Prior inductees into the Hall of Fame include former NBA Commissioner David Stern; Israel’s “Mr. Basketball,” Tal Brody; and philanthropists Joseph Taub, a former owner of the New Jersey Nets; Leonard Rubin, who established the Rubin Run to promote healthy living and support people with special needs; and Jeff Kurtz, a multisport star and scholarship athlete.
