Cyprus gets a new sefer Torah
Overwhelmingly most of the press releases we get are in English. Occasionally they’re in Hebrew. Once in a blue moon, they’re in both.
But this week we got one in English, Greek, and Russian. Three languages, three alphabets. It’s great looking just as an object.
But the content’s pretty wonderful too, so here it is (translated from the PR):
The Jewish community in Larnaca, on Cyprus, welcomed a new Torah scroll on August 13 — Rosh Chodesh Elul. Community members wrote the scroll’s final letters at the Jewish Culture Centre, and then they danced the newborn Torah through the town’s streets to the Central Synagogue, where the celebration continued.
The evening ended with a chasidic farbrengen honoring Elul and the birthdays of the Baal Shem Tov and the Alter Rebbe. Rabbis and Chabad shlichim from across Cyprus joined the celebration.
