Rabbi Claire Ginsburg Goldstein, who has brought more than 172,500 recycled stuffed toys to children in Israel through her Bears from Bergenfield program, worked with bat mitzvah girl Ilyssa Cohn of New City on her bear collection. Rabbi Daniel Pernick of her shul, Beth Am Temple in Pearl River, oversaw the mitzvah project. The organization collects gently used stuffed animals and toys and flies them to Israel for children of all faiths who have been traumatized by war and illness.

After the bears were sorted, washed, and counted, Ilyssa’s mother, Dawne Cohn, bought Bears from Bergenfield ribbons to tie on the bears she was collecting to donate. The toys are for Bayit-Cham in Nahariya, Bat Melech-Miklat, and Meir Medical Center in Kfar Saba.
