West Orange native Hailey Kops, who skated in the 2022 Olympics for Team Israel, visited the Jewish Home Assisted Living in River Vale last week. Ms. Kops, who graduated from Joseph Kushner Hebrew Academy & Rae Kushner Yeshiva High School in Livingston and Midreshet Amit in Israel, maintains her observant, shomer Shabbat life while practicing her skating. She spoke about her successes in the Junior Olympics and her decision to leave figure skating as she graduated from high school and went to seminary in Israel for her gap year. That changed when she was asked to join Team Israel’s Olympic team when she returned to the United States.
Residents presented the figure skater with flowers and an array of questions. Her parents, Lisa and Steven Kops, attended the program. Jewish Home Assisted Living chefs prepared Israel and Olympics-themed refreshments with cookies featuring Ms. Kops in a jump.
“It was amazing to see how excited our elders were to connect with Ms. Kops,” Aryeh Markowitz, JHAL’s executive director, said. “We are dedicated to making sure our residents continue to be actively involved in the community and are able to pursue their interests. Connecting with an exceptional Olympian from our own community was thrilling — and now she has a 100 or so more proud adoptive grandparents. So it’s a win-win!”
The Jewish Home Assisted Living offers glatt kosher RCBC cuisine and a traditional Jewish living environment along with various levels of care and a home-like memory care unit in Bergen County.
