During Hillel of Rockland’s volunteer trip to Israel in May, the students went to Sderot, a city in the southern part of the country, near Gaza. They went to share love and support to the people of Israel; they were armed with paint and elbow grease.

Working together under the leadership of a talented Hillel alumna, Michal Breur, the group transformed an unsightly, somber bomb shelter into a vibrant work of artistry and love. The incredible before and after of the shelter embodied the spirit of their trip.

Other activities included farm work, hospital visits, and food packaging. The group focused on helping to transform the sadness, loneliness, and despair many Israelis feel into hope, joy, and connection.

Rabbi Dov and Shevy Oliver are the directors of Hillel of Rockland County, which is based at Rockland Community College.
