Temple Emeth in Teaneck will explore the themes of “Sadness is a White Bird” by Moriel Rothman-Zecher, at its One Book, One Synagogue Shabbaton on Saturday, February 24. There will also be a Zoom option.

The day begins at 9 a.m. with a Torah study session on the poetry of Mahmoud Darwish. “Sadness is a White Bird” quotes from five of his poems, and the title comes from Darwish’s work. Participants will study and discuss one of these poems as a way to understand the relationship between Arabs and Israel.

A Shabbat service at 10:30 will incorporate the book’s themes. At noon there’s a festive kiddush lunch, which is free, but RSVPs are required by February 20; email lindaposkanzer@msn.com.

At 12:45 there will be a book discussion and film with the book’s author, Moriel Rothman-Zecher, who will talk about how much of his novel is autobiographical.

After the discussion there will be a film screening about three Palestinian Israeli women living in an apartment in Tel Aviv, trying to find a balance between traditional and modern culture.

For information on the program or how to Zoom it, email Smercado@emeth.org or call (201) 833-1322.
