Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy and sons sing ‘Mi Sheberach’ to Minneapolis
A few weeks ago, Wilco frontman Jeff Tweedy and his two sons, Spencer and Sammy, shared a moving rendition of Debbie Friedman’s beautiful tune for the Jewish prayer for healing, the Mi Sheberach. The recording is dedicated to the people of Minneapolis, after the shootings of Renee Good and Alex Pretti shook the city.
“This is a song for healing,” the boys’ mother, Susan Tweedy, wrote on Instagram. “We send this to the people of Minneapolis. What’s happening there is so terrible and traumatic. Sending love and strength to everyone there, including some dear friends, and to people struggling everywhere.”
The family is Jewish; Ms. Tweedy and her sons are Jews from birth, and Mr. Tweedy converted to Judaism about a decade ago.
They first posted themselves singing Ms. Friedman’s Mi Sheberach during the pandemic, and they rerecorded and reposted it after October 7.
They sing in both Hebrew and English. This is the English-language version they sing:
“May the source of strength who blessed the ones before us help us find the courage to make our lives a blessing, and let us say Amen.”
