About 2,000 students, alumni, and faculty attended this year’s 31st annual Shabbat 2400 dinner at Binghamton University on Friday, March 28. Binghamton University president Harvey Stenger and Brian Rose, vice president of student affairs, both were there.

The pre-Shabbat program included appetizers, lessons in wrapping tefillin, a tribute to the Jewish community’s sisters and brothers in Israel, greetings from President Stenger and NCAA football player Sam Salz, and dancing. Hundreds of women lit Shabbat candles.

The program, originally, called Shabbat 1000, has evolved into a longstanding tradition that has been replicated on more than 150 campuses around the world. Binghamton still maintains the record for the largest number of students gathered in one space for a Shabbat dinner. It is a National Chabad on Campus Initiative.
