It’s a well-known cliche that contemporary Israel combines the ancient and the modern.

But despite being a cliche, and therefore not at all surprising, the set of photos my sister posted to Facebook from the last days of her Passover visit to Israel nonetheless took my breath away for their sheer time-warping juxtaposition.

So for your viewing pleasure, photos of a Byzantine mosaic from around the year 400 c.e. unearthed near Shiloh, and of robot-assisted dining in a Jerusalem chain restaurant with the unlikely name of “Cafe Greg.”
