New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy visited the House of Ten Commandments, the synagogue in Bahrain’s capital, Manama, when he landed in the kingdom of Bahrain on April 28. The synagogue is the oldest in the Gulf Cooperation Council countries. The governor was greeted by Ambassador Houda Nonoo, Bahrain’s former ambassador to the United States and the first — and only — Jewish ambassador from an Arab country. During his visit, Mr. Murphy learned about the local Jewish community, its seamless integration into Bahraini society, and the kingdom’s focus on coexistence and interfaith dialogue.

The governor visited Bahrain as part of a three-country economic tour in the GCC, where he also stopped in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.
