Memorial lighting with tehillim in Englewood
Congregation Ahavath Torah of Englewood’s senior rabbi, Chaim Poupko, along with shul president Paul Lerer, arranged for a memorial lighting and tehillim gathering on the first night of Chanukah, with six other Englewood synagogues: East Hill Synagogue, Rabbi Zev Reichman; Congregation Shomrei Emunah, Rabbi Menachem Genack; Kehilat Kesher, Rabbi Akiva Block; Etz Chayim: The Englewood Sheibel, Rabbi Daniel Goldberg; and Chabad of Englewood, Rabbi Shmuel Konikov. Rabbi Mordechai Kuessous of CAT’s Benaroya Sephardic Center was also there.
The program was held to commemorate and hold solidarity for the antisemitic shooting and killing of so many Jewish people in Bondi, Australia.
The chanukiyah that was lit, the Netiv HaAsara menorah, was built and designed by the Moriah School in Englewood. It was created using shards of artwork salvaged from the Israeli moshav of Netiv HaAsara, that was destroyed on October 7, 2023, and where 18 members of the community were killed that day.
The menorah project was initiated by members of the Jewish communities in Englewood and Tenafly, who worked to help members of the moshav rebuild their lives.
