Leonia synagogue welcomes new student cantor

Joseph Flaxman is the new student cantor at Congregation Adas Emuno in Leonia. He is a fourth-year cantorial student at the Hebrew Union College – Jewish Institute of Religion, where he is a fellow under Rabbi Larry Hoffman. Previously Mr. Flaxman was the student cantor at the Stephen Wise Free Synagogue in New York City, under the guidance of Cantor Dan Singer. Before cantorial school, he had a career on the international opera stage. A graduate of the Manhattan School of Music, he has performed at venues in the U.S. and around the world, including the Metropolitan Opera Guild, Lincoln Center, and Carnegie Hall.

Mr. Flaxman will join Rabbi Barry Schwartz on the bimah for Shabbat and holiday services and will teach in the synagogue’s religious school.

Congregation Adas Emuno, a Reform synagogue founded in 1871, will conclude its year-long 150th anniversary celebrations in October.  Go to www.adasemuno.org for more information.
