George Hantgan, 98, died Dec. 6.

A northern New Jersey professional Jewish communal leader for seven decades, among his many leadership roles he was the first executive director of the Englewood Jewish Community Center (now the Kaplen JCC on the Palisades); founding executive of the local UJA (now Jewish Federation of Northern New Jersey); and is listed in “Who’s Who in World Jewry”.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Ida (Hon); children, Dr. Jeffrey (Rita Sugarman) of Arlington, Mass., Roberta of Lawrence, Mass., and Richard (Ann Palevsky) of Owings Mills, Md.; and grandchildren, Rachel, Michael, Eli, and Sara.

Donations can be sent to the Kaplen JCC on the Palisades, Tenafly; Temple Emanu-el of Closter; or the Jewish Home Foundation, Rockleigh.

Services were held at the Kaplen JCC on the Palisades; shiva was at the Jewish Home at Rockleigh. Arrangements were by Gutterman and Musicant Jewish Funeral Directors, Hackensack.
