Why it pays to read Hebrew

The annual Eurovision song contest is taking place in Tel Aviv this week, and signs of Eurovision fever are everywhere. 

This sign, posted by the Burger Ranch fast food chain, complements its universal Eurowishes in English with two slangy Hebrew lines that outsider would assume are a direct translation but instead say, more or less, “Juuuuuuust kidding. Good luck only to Kobi.” 

That’s Kobi Marimi, the singer representing Israel in this year’s contest.
