Chanukah in Tenafly
On December 29, Tenafly Pride committee members and supporters gathered outside Temple Sinai of Bergen County to light their menorah with rainbow lights. Rabbi Jordan Millstein and Natalie Kavanagh led the program.
“Chanukah has some similarity to LGBTQ themes,” Ms. Kavanagh said. “It’s the story of freedom of religion like the freedom to be who you genuinely are, your authentic self. It’s the story of resilience and the power of love, the celebration of light leading us out of the dark.” Ms. Kavanagh is a Tenafly Pride member.
“I love that Chanukah is a holiday about bringing light into darkness and overcoming evil and challenges as we go into a new year,” Tenafly Councilwoman Julie O’Conner said. “A Pride Menorah lighting is about inclusivity, and it really has its place in the growing positivity of our community.”
“Chanukah is really about bringing light to the darkness, and that’s what Tenafly Pride does,” Rabbi Millstein said. “We’re going to keep up that struggle to keep light where there’s darkness, no matter what.”
