Bill Charlap and the Bill Charlap Trio — Bill Charlap on piano, Peter Washington on bass, and Kenny Washington on drums — will perform “Theater Songs of Leonard Bernstein” at NJPAC in Newark on June 17 at 7:30 p.m. Ted Chapin, a theater insider, will host this postponed edition of NJPAC’s “Conversations in Concert.”
The program promises to be a thought-provoking evening of stories about the iconic composer-conductor complemented by some of Bernstein’s songs. Mr. Bernstein’s daughter Jamie will tell stories and childhood memories from her book, “Famous Father Girl: A Memoir of Growing Up Bernstein.” The Bill Charlap Trio will perform Bernstein classics, including “America,” “Lucky To Be Me,” “Some Other Time,” “Glitter and be Gay,” “Somewhere,” and “Cool.”
Mr. Charlap, who lives in West Orange, is the director of jazz studies at William Paterson University in Wayne.
