Celebrating Leonard Bernstein

Celebrating Leonard Bernstein

Temple Emeth in Teaneck presents “A Celebration of Leonard Bernstein” on Sunday, March 3, at 2 p.m. The free concert features one of his pieces, “Halil: Nocturne for Flute, Percussion and Piano,” as well as other Bernstein-related works. Flutist Carol Shansky, pianist Diana Hughes, and percussionists Kimberly Burja, Darren Gage, and Jay O’Brien will perform. The concert is the first in a series sponsored by the Robert and Gilda Glazer Fund. An informal talk will accompany the music.

Bernstein composed “Halil” in 1981, in memory of a young Israeli flutist who was killed during the Yom Kippur War. (Halil is the Hebrew word for flute.) Originally scored for flute, strings, and an array of percussion instruments, a 1987 version was published for flute, piano, xylophone, glockenspiel, and vibraphone, with optional timpani.

The five musicians are award-winning New York area freelance artists and educators. The Robert and Gilda Glazer Fund at Temple Emeth was established by a bequest from Gilda Glazer, who was a member of Emeth from 2007 until her death in 2020. It endows an annual concert of classical music to be performed at the synagogue. For more information email Carol Shansky at carolshansky@gmail.com or go to www.Emeth.org.
