Bergen County held a solemn ceremony in observance of Yom HaZikaron. County officials, community leaders, and residents gathered outside One Bergen County Plaza to mark Israel’s day of remembrance for its fallen soldiers and victims of terrorism. The Israeli flag was raised to honor the Israeli lives lost in defense of freedom, and students from the Frisch School in Paramus sang Hatikvah.

“We gathered to raise the Israeli flag at One Bergen County Plaza on Yom HaZikaron to reflect and honor all those who sacrificed their lives to defend Israel,” Bergen County Commissioner Tracy Silna Zur said. “During these last 570 days, we often felt isolated and alone. It was so important to see and feel the support of our county government.”

“As we raise the flag of Israel at One Bergen County Plaza, we do so to honor the lives lost defending the State of Israel and the innocent victims of terror — including Tenafly’s own Edan Alexander, who remains unaccounted for,” Bergen County Executive Jim Tedesco said. “But we also raise it as a symbol of resilience and unity. From the horrors of the Holocaust to the heartbreak of October 7, history teaches us what happens when hate goes unchecked. Bergen County stands with our Jewish community — today and every day — and we remain committed to confronting antisemitism, defending democracy, and bringing every hostage home.”
