80 Auschwitz survivors share memories for Claims Conference

On the 80th commemoration of the liberation of Auschwitz, the Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany — better known as the Claims Conference — launched “I Survived Auschwitz: Remember This,” featuring 80 Auschwitz survivors offering a personal memory from the Holocaust that they want the world never to forget. Survivors Tova Friedman of Highland Park and Henry Shery of Manchester were among the participants.

The Claims Conference also released the results of a new eight-country Holocaust Knowledge and Awareness survey; those countries include the United States. To see the survey, go to www.claimscon.org/country-survey/.

Among the findings: More than 75% of respondents in the U.S. believe a Holocaust-like genocide could happen again. (This is a significant increase from the 58% of Americans who believed this when surveyed approximately seven years ago).

Approximately half of U.S. adults cannot name a single concentration camp or ghetto.

Across all eight countries, the youngest adults surveyed — who are below 30 — are more likely to believe that the number of Jews killed in the Holocaust has been exaggerated.

Adults in France have the least knowledge of Holocaust. Encouragingly, American adults are most likely to have heard about the Holocaust and there is wide support for Holocaust education.
