Tithing, not taxes - The Jewish Standard

Rabbi Shammai Engelmayer indeed is in the Twilight Zone (“The Torah is no ‘Tea Party,'” Sept. 2). The Torah commandment to tithe – ignored in the column – means charity, not taxes. To claim fiscal conservatives (Tea Party activists) are heartless assumes the only answer is Uncle Sam. Feel free to send voluntary contributions to Washington, D.C., but please respect my opinion: the way to make the world a better place is private charity. An interim editor should at least attempt to hide his shameful political bias.
