Brianna Doherty of NJ’s Department of Education Commission on Holocaust Education in Trenton, Cara Thapa of Kean University in Union, and Keith Laviola of Forrestdale Middle School in Rumson were chosen to be 2024 Jewish Foundation for the Righteous Alfred Lerner Fellows. They were among 22 middle and high school teachers and Holocaust center staff from eight U.S. states and Poland picked for the selective program. Fellows must be English or social studies teachers at the middle or high school level, have taught for at least five years, be at least five years from retirement, and now teach the Holocaust in their classrooms .

Last month, the new fellows completed the JFR’s Summer Institute for Teachers at the Hilton Newark Airport. It’s an intensive five-day course that delves into Holocaust history and gives new teaching techniques for introducing the subject of the Holocaust into their classrooms.

“The three primary goals for the JFR’s Summer Institute are to provide teachers with a graduate-level course on antisemitism and the Holocaust, to empower educators to develop pedagogical connections with other teachers, and to equip these teachers with additional resources to bring back to their classrooms,” Stanlee Stahl, JFR’s executive vice president, said.
