National Geographic offers a series on Anne Frank and Miep Gies’ story
National Geographic will premiere “A Small Light,” an eight-part limited series focusing on the real-life story of Miep Gies, who played a critical role in hiding Anne Frank and her family during the Nazi occupation in Amsterdam. To honor Miep on what would have been her 114th birthday, the series, produced by ABC Signature and Keshet Studios for National
Geographic, will begin on Monday, May 1, on National Geographic. New episodes will debut every Monday on National Geographic and will stream next day on Disney+.
Otto Frank’s secretary Miep Gies risked everything to hide Anne Frank and her family in Amsterdam. Ms. Gies was a young, carefree, and opinionated woman when her boss, Anne Frank’s father, asked her to help hide his family from the Nazis during World War II. For the next two years, she and her husband, Jan, with several other everyday heroes, watched over the Frank, van Pels, and Pfeffer families hiding in the secret annex.
Filmed on location in Amsterdam and Prague, the film also reveals that in addition to hiding the eight people in the annex from the Nazis, the couple was simultaneously hiding many others in and around Amsterdam with the help of the Dutch Resistance.
The series title comes from something Miep said late in her life: “I don’t like being called a hero because no one should ever think you have to be special to help others. Even an ordinary secretary or a housewife or a teenager can turn on a small light in a dark room.” For information, go to www.nationalgeographic.com/tv.
