Jewish Historical Society honors Arthur Barchenko and Mickey Levine

The Jewish Historical Society of North Jersey held its annual dinner on May 17 at Temple Beth Tikvah in Wayne. Arthur Barchenko of Wayne and Mickey Levine of New York City, formerly of Paterson, were honored for their outstanding contributions and service to the Jewish community of Northern New Jersey. Mark Zettler of Hackensack, a Jewish Historical Society member, moderated the program.
Mr. Barchenko is president of the Rabbi Israel S. Dresner Center for Collaborative Learning at TBT. He’s a past president of Temple Beth Tikvah and was instrumental in finding the site where Temple Beth Tikvah stands today. He chaired the Israeli Bonds Committee and United Jewish Appeal and is a member of the Jewish Federation of Northern New Jersey, Northern New Jersey Jewish/African American Interfaith Committee, the Temple Beth Tikvah Security committee, chair of the Holocaust Torah Program committee, and a member of the Jewish Historical Society of Northern New Jersey.
Mickey Levine has been the Jewish Cemetery Association of New Jersey’s executive vice president for more than 28 years. The association now oversees 22 cemeteries; Mr. Levine is responsible for their maintenance. He was the vice president and president of Temple Emanuel, formerly in Paterson and Franklin Lakes, and the Veritans Club president. He’s also a member of the Jewish Historical Society.
Special recognition was given to the ad journal committee: Howard Ebright, Chuck Oremland, Sheri Feldman, and Pearl Liss. Ina Cohen gave a tribute to JHS’s co-president of membership, Moe Liss, z’l. Mr. Liss was part of the team that sought donations and secured the mortgage for JHS to buy the 17-10 River Road location. He was a member of the board and the association’s treasurer when he died in December.
