Ceremony to honor Mickey Marcus of Israel’s war of independence
The American Veterans of Israel Legacy Corporation holds the 60th annual Mickey Marcus Memorial, honoring Colonel Marcus and American veterans/volunteers who aided the State of Israel during its War of Independence. The commemoration, officiated by the Garrison Jewish chaplain and AVILC directors, will be at West Point on Sunday, May 3, at 11 a.m., in the USMA Jewish Chapel,
The program will recognize those who made the ultimate sacrifice, with special acknowledgment of U.S. Army Colonel David “Mickey” Marcus, who became Israel’s first general of the Israel Defense Forces. The American hero of the 1948 Israeli War for Independence, also a West Point graduate, is buried at the USMA in West Point.
The program includes a wreath-laying ceremony at Colonel Marcus’s gravesite, followed by an honor guard firing salute and the sounding of Taps. Author Steven Ossad will discuss his book, “Chasing the Shadow: Mickey Marcus’s 200 Days of Destiny,” an exploration of Marcus’s extraordinary life and legacy.
