Celebrity chef to prepare recipes inspired by Holocaust cookbook
In conjunction with Temple Sinai of Bergen County’s programming for Irmari Nacht’s exhibit there, “Books110Terezin,” celebrity chef Josh Capon will lead an afternoon of cooking on Sunday, February 1, at the shul. He will prepare selected dishes inspired by “In Memory’s Kitchen,” the book of recipes assembled by some of the women the Nazis held captive in Terezin. It will run from 3 to 5 p.m., and will honor the women’s courage.
Shelly and Justin Wimpfheimer donated “Books110Terezin” to Temple Sinai; the artwork has catalyzed a yearlong series of events called “Women in the Holocaust.” Programs center on the artwork and the role of women during the Holocaust.
“Books110Terezin” honors the starving women held in the concentration camp, who recorded recipes from their past to help them manage their grief and fear, and to give them hope that they might be free again someday.
At the Sinai program, about 10 women will work as sous chefs; others will be observers, and all will be tasters. They also will participate in a discussion about the women of Terezin. Attendance will be limited to 25 people. The cost to participate is $18 per person, to cover the cost of cooking supplies.
