Most of the time, the real prize for writing a story for this paper is the chance to meet and speak with an interesting member of our community. That certainly was the case last year, when I profiled Hy Eisman of Glen Rock, who draws the weekly Popeye comic strip syndicated around the world.
Another prize followed, when the American Jewish Press Association honored that story with a Rockower award.
But the most surprising, and most touching, award came in the mail not long after we announced the Rockower prize. Hy Eisman, who as it turns out reads the Jewish Standard, sent along an award of his own, featuring Popeye and Olive Oil.
