Unity Shabbat of Ashkenazi and Jews of Color in Newark

Everyone is welcome to the second annual Unity Shabbat on Saturday, February 10, at 10 a.m., when Congregation Ahavas Shalom in Newark installs Rabbi Eliyahu Ben Lewi as its rabbi. The installation is during Shabbat services and will be officiated by Rabbi Capers Funnye of Chicago, who is the chief rabbi of the Israelite Board of Rabbis, a member of the New York Board of Rabbis, and Michelle Obama’s cousin.

Based on last year’s Unity Shabbat, about 75 members of Israelite congregations in New York City and beyond are likely to join with five Israelite rabbis. A full kosher luncheon will be served, and there will be afternoon discussions about Judaism and social justice.

An exhibit, “Witness to Captivity” by artist Kay Reese, on the shul’s second floor, at the Jewish Museum of New Jersey, will be open to view.

There is free, guarded, on-site parking. For more information or to RSVP, call shul president Eric Freedman, at (201) 988-3799, or email him at
