I’d like to thank Rabbi Engelmayer for his column, “The True Tragedy of Tishah B’Av” (July 5). For many years I have felt frustrated by the emphasis on suffering in Judaism, especially on Tisha B’Av and on Yom Kippur.
Now, finally, because of the column, I can reframe the way I think of Jewish suffering. I can focus on the triumph, on the fact that the Jewish people are forever, and on the fact that what makes us Jews is memory.
Thank you very much.
