Summer concerts honor Year of the Woman
To celebrate the strength of women in 2018, the Rosen Performing Arts Center in the Wayne YMCA, both kicks off and ends its Eight Summer Concert series with women who have earned their fame in their professions.
Lyn Dillies, who opens the series on Thursday, July 12, at 7 p.m., is the first female illusionist in history to receive the prestigious Milbourne Christopher Academy of Magic award from the Society of American Magicians. Past recipients include David Copperfield, Penn and Teller, and Siegfried and Roy. She also has won the Merlin Award for Female Illusionist of the Year from the International Magician’s Society.
Eight weeks later, on August 30, Deni Bonet leads a troupe of musicians with her ultra-high-voltage violin performance. She has performed at a sold-out show at Carnegie Hall and at the White House for President Obama, she tours with Cyndi Lauper, and she has recorded with R.E.M. and Sarah McLachlan.
July 12 ticket holders will receive a free ice cream float in the Y’s atrium, beginning at 5:45.
Tickets are $16 for each show or $100 for eight shows. Subsequent shows, all on Thursday nights at 7, include tributes to such greats as Cole Porter, Judy Garland, Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, the Bee Gees, the Rolling Stones, and Peter, Paul and Mary, plus the comedy of Ross Bennett.
