Elaine Martz, who just turned 17, ran the 26.2 mile Sri Chinmoy Marathon in Rockland Lake State Park in Congers, N.Y., on August 24. The youngest runner in the marathon, she placed third in the 20-year-old-and-under category. Elaine is a senior and honor student at Teaneck High School, where she also is a member of the THS varsity cross country and track teams. She and her family are active in the local Jewish community, including at Congregation Beth Sholom in Teaneck.

Funds raised benefit the Nettie Says Organization, a not-for-profit that was created in honor of Elaine’s younger sister, Nettie Faith Martz, who died when she was 10. The Nettie Says Organization advocates for the full inclusion and active participation of all people of varying abilities. Nettie was the inspiration for a fully inclusive playground for all children in Teaneck, and that led to the establishment of the organization. For information, go to nettiesays.org.
