Schechter Oakland alumni join the Friends of IDF Israel tour
Monica Steinberg and Scott Nadler, both alumni of the Gerrard Berman Solomon Schechter Day School in Oakland, were among a group of about 60 young supporters attending a Friends of the Israel Defense Forces National Young Leadership Mission to Israel this summer.
Ms. Steinberg, an FIDF New Jersey development associate, and Mr. Nadler, an FIDF New York Young Leadership board member, are shown at the Tel Nof air base, where both of their fathers served in the IDF.
The mission brought members of FIDF’s YL Division together with IDF soldiers. Mission participants received briefings on Israel’s security situation from military officers, visited strategic IDF army, navy, and air force bases to get a behind-the-scenes look into the Israeli military’s activities, and toured Israel, going from mystical Safed to the beaches of Tel Aviv to Jerusalem’s Old City.
The group also helped support IDF soldiers during Israel’s first national IDF Appreciation Week, when they visited and heard firsthand from combat paratroopers guarding Israel’s border with Gaza, as well as from Air Force soldiers and officers. They also handed out refreshments.
“This Young Leadership Mission brought our young FIDF supporters together with the brave IDF soldiers who risk their lives every day to watch over Israel and the Jewish people,” the FIDF’s national YL director, Bari Lovi, said. “It was an incredible opportunity to see Israel in a whole new way, and to forge bonds with soldiers whose well-being they support through FIDF.”
