Schechter Bergen celebrates golden anniversary
The Solomon Schechter Day School of Bergen County (Schechter Bergen) marked its 50th anniversary at the Hilton Pearl River on June 2. About 500 parents, grandparents, alumni parents, alumni, and friends gathered for the school’s annual Community Celebration, a tribute to its rich history and promising future. Schechter Bergen is the only halachic and egalitarian Jewish day school in Bergen County.
The evening included performances by eighth- graders and the middle school chorus, a student-led tribute to Schechter’s brave alumni serving in the Israel Defense Forces, a silent auction, a comprehensive historical timeline of the school’s history, and the recognition of key figures who have shaped the school’s legacy. This year’s honorees included Schechter Bergen board presidents, AHAVA Parent Association presidents, heads of school, administration, teachers, and staff. The inaugural Schechter Bergen Distinguished Alumni award was also presented.

Reflecting on Schechter Bergen’s journey, Head of School Steve Freedman expressed gratitude for the visionary founders, dedicated educators, passionate parents, and countless supporters who have propelled the school forward over the past five decades. “Today, as we look back on half a century of growth and achievement, we honor those who came before us,” he said. “Because of their hard work, sacrifice, and unwavering dedication, our school has flourished. As we celebrate this milestone, we also look to the future with hope and ambition. We dream of a school that continues to thrive. We envision a future where our students continue to grow into leaders, innovators, and compassionate individuals who carry forward the legacy of our people.”
