Sanctions like smoke

In your Point/Counterpoint feature (June 29), David Harris claimed that Obama “has imposed and implemented the most comprehensive sanctions against Iran in history – with more on the way.” However, it appears the sanctions law is not what it is purported to be.

According to the Wall Street Journal (“Obama’s Iran Loopholes,” July 2), the administration lobbied to include a provision that “if a country significantly reduced its oil imports from Iran, the State Department could exempt it from sanctions for a renewable period of six months.” Exemptions have already been granted to India, Japan, China, and many others.

Unfortunately, for many big importers, the sanctions are mostly smoke.
