Great article on Jerry Nathans, who has done a wonderful job in preserving Paterson’s Jewish history (“Paterson’s past still present,” Dec. 14).
However you missed the best part of the story. Interview Jerry on Paterson and he will tell you there were 30,00 Jews and 15 synagogues (If some of the numbers are off it is due to my memory, not his.) Hard to believe but only one bagel baker, and we also had the Purity co-op baking all the rye bread. Jerry has a wealth of knowledge.
My grandfather was one of the silk mill owners, and Jerry was able to find info for me. Let him tell you some of the stories about Paterson, which was a wonderful Jewish community in its day.
