‘October Sky’ plays in May
Students at the Sinai Schools’ Karasick Shalem High School at the Torah Academy of Bergen County will perform an original production of “October Sky” on May 15, at 6:30 p.m., at Ma’ayanot Yeshiva High School for Girls in Teaneck. Sinai teachers will direct the performance.
“October Sky” is based on a movie about a West Virginia coal miner’s son, who is expected to follow his father into the mines. Inspired by the launch of Sputnik, he and his friends take up rocketry instead, and connect with a group of scientists who support their endeavors.
Sinai works with children with special needs, tailoring their programs to those needs. The school’s production of “October Sky” is a culmination of a yearlong therapeutic drama program. Work begins in September, when Sinai teachers begin adapting scripts and roles to match each student’s strengths. Teachers emphasize skills including expressive language, organization, and collaboration. The unique program is designed to promote social development, build confidence, and create a powerful unity of the student body and school community.
