A family from Hunterdon County, N.J., is claiming discrimination because a ShopRite bakery would not write a birthday message on their 3-year-old’s birthday cake. What was the message they wanted? Why, only to wish happy birthday to their son, Adolf Hitler Campbell.
Yes, they named their son Adolf Hitler. The couple’s two other children are JoyceLynn Aryan Nation Campbell and Honszlynn Hinler Jeannie Campbell.
On one hand, you have to feel extremely sorry for these children. Not only are they going to be ostracized from the community and in school, but the parents are going to inflict their twisted values upon them. In this AP article, the children’s father, Health Campbell, said:
“There’s a new president and he says it’s time for a change; well, then it’s time for a change,” the 35-year-old continued. “They need to accept a name. A name’s a name. The kid isn’t going to grow up and do what (Hitler) did.”
I’m sure President-elect Obama is thrilled that his presidency is being used to defend the glorification of one of history’s worst despots.
A Lehigh Valley paper has received many comments on the story, some con, some pro.
The same paper has written an in-depth look at the family’s lives.
What do you think, readers? Should ShopRite have given in to the family’s birthday wish? Should deliberately naming your child after a mass murdered constitute child abuse?
UPDATE: The Big Lipowsky has learned that while ShopRite stuck to its guns, a Pennsylvania Wal-Mart store agreed to make the “Happy Birthday Adolf Hitler” cake.
