NCJW Rockland awards scholarships

For the 28th year, the Rockland section of the National Council of Jewish Women honored four Rockland County high school seniors with community service awards. The students have shown commitment and dedication to improving the community through their service projects. Each winner received a $1,000 scholarship and an NCJW Rockland award certificate. Karen Sherman from NCJW chairs the selection committee that grants these awards to foster continuing higher education and the spirit of volunteerism.

This year’s winners were Molly Marcus and Jimmy Jiang, both of Nanuet Senior High School; Alexis Palencia of Ramapo Senior High School; and Valencia Massaro of Tappan Zee Senior High School.

Molly Marcus volunteers at the Feeding Young Minds Book Project of People to People and has distributed more than 30,000 books to needy children at the community P-to-P Food Pantry. She will attend the University of Connecticut. Alexis Palencia volunteers at New York Civil Liberties Union. He lobbied in Albany to advocate policies to promote justice, representing his peers. He will attend Columbia University. Valencia Massaro volunteers as a social coordinator at Compassion Café, a nonprofit organization run by and dedicated to providing paid employment to 85 special needs adults. She will attend Cornell University. Jimmy Jiang volunteers as a commissary assistant working on the food line at Meals on Wheels, preparing healthy meals for the needy. He is also is a Nanuet Fire Engine Company volunteer firefighter and will be attending Stony Brook University. Learn more at www.ncjw-rockland.org.
