Three volunteers from the Bergen County section of the National Council of Jewish Women celebrated Thanksgiving with 15 families participating in the Home Instruction for Parents of Preschool Youngsters at Bergen Family Center. Ina Miller Silverstein read “This is the Turkey.” Using a small stuffed doll, Joan Schnuer sang “If You’re Happy and You Know It” with children and their parents. After watching a cooking demonstration by guest chef Edie Kaplan, the children made their own cranberry relish. The ingredients were provided by the volunteers and delivered to the families by Bergen Family Center’s home educators.
Rachele Ventrone, director of Parent Engagement at Bergen Family Center, was the host and provided support to the volunteers.
HIPPY is an evidenced-based program that trains parents to be their children’s first teachers. For nearly three decades, volunteers from Bergen County’s NCJW have interacted with HIPPY children and their families at Bergen Family Center, acting as role models by reading stories, creating crafts, and sharing in musical presentations and interactive cooking.
