More than 800 attorneys and judges participated in the 18th annual Jewish Law Symposium on September 26; it was at the Birchwood Manor in Whippany and also online and featured a panel discussion “The Ethics of War and Peace.”

Alyza Lewin, Esq., a Washington lawyer and the president of the Louis D. Brandeis Center for Human Rights Under Law, and Rabbi Shalom Lubin of the Chabad of SE Morris County, who is the founder of the Jewish Law Symposium, moderated a panel discussion. Panelists were Dov Ben-Shimon, then the CEO of the Jewish Federation of Greater MetroWest; Russell G. Pearce, a professor of legal ethics, morality, and religion at the Fordham University School of Law; and scholar, author, and lecturer Rabbi Shlomo Yaffe.

“For the past two and a half years, our eyes and focus have been glued to war in Ukraine, and of course, this past year, the war in Israel,” Rabbi Lubin said. “Navigating the complex topics of war and peace from an ethical and legal perspective, through the lens of both civil law, Talmudic law, and 2,000 years of Jewish ethics and wisdom, was the goal for this program, which was most intriguing and relevant.”

“I find this program to be intellectually stimulating and fascinating; I love attending every year,” the program’s chair, Cary B. Cheifetz, said. “If you come to the Jewish Law Symposium, you will walk away with a body of knowledge you will never forget.

The Jewish Law Symposium is a project of the Jewish Ethics Academy, Chabad of SE Morris County, and Rabbinical College of America. For information, go to www.JewishLawSymposium.com or call (973) 377-0707.
