Maccabi basketball tryouts this weekend

In preparation for the annual JCC Maccabi games at the JCC of Greater Baltimore on Sunday, May 6, the Kaplen JCC on the Palisades will hold basketball tryouts for Junior and Mini Maccabi games for Team Palisades on Sunday, Dec 10, from 5 to 7 p.m. Girls will try out from 5 to 6; boys from 6 to 7.  The 2018 basketball team will be led by CMEK, a basketball program that offers specialized training and skills clinics to children at the JCC.

Mini Maccabi is a one-day tournament for Jewish athletes, 9 and 10-years-old, with more than 400 athletes from eight Mid-Atlantic JCCs competing. Junior Maccabi, also a one-day tournament, is for 11 and 12-year-olds, with over 700 athletes from 15 JCCs competing. The tournaments help prepare young athletes for the annual Maccabi games when they turn 13.

Minis must be Jewish boys and girls, ages 9 to 10 by May 1, 2018; juniors need to be 11 to 12 by that date.

Once the team is assembled, participants will begin a weekly practice in March and compete in two or three weekend tournaments leading up to the games. There will also be an optional Maccabi skills clinic.
