A crowd eager for tips on how to live in the moment and distance themselves from everyday stresses recently gathered at the Kaplen JCC on the Palisades in Tenafly for the first half-day meditation retreat there.

Mark Van Buren, a yoga, meditation, and mindful living trainer at the Graf Center for Integrative Medicine at Englewood Health, guided participants to incorporate meditation into their daily routine. This includes sitting, walking, meditative dance, and lying quietly on the floor. He also discussed the core teachings of the relaxing practice and taught participants about journaling. The day was such a success that a second one has been scheduled for November 4.

“Meditation is one of the best tools for finding inner peace in our highly stressful, fast-paced lives,” Mr. Van Buren said. “It provides emotional well-being and a wide range of additional health benefits that people often overlook as an essential aspect of their workout routines.”

The JCC offers health-focused community events like this one several times a year, bringing the community together in a private, peaceful, spa-like setting. The meditation retreat was held in partnership with The Rodgers Family Meditation Program at the Graf Center for Integrative Medicine at Englewood Health. These programs and collaborations are aimed to encourage everyone in the community to engage in healthful activities and to learn about all the fitness options open to them.
