JHF to honor heroes virtually

On Sunday, October 18, at 6 p.m., the Jewish Home Family will hold its annual gala. This year, the gala, which will be virtual, will honor its heroes.

For more than 100 years, the Jewish Home’s leaders and supporters have gathered in the fall to celebrate its accomplishments and honor community members for their extraordinary commitment to quality care for our elders. The elegant black-tie evening is considered one of the most important philanthropic occasion on the Bergen County Jewish calendar.

Like other events in the community over the past seven months, this year’s celebration will be different. The gala will be on line, and it will be free and open to all.

This year, the evening’s tributes will be focused on “Our Heroes” — the Jewish Home staff, a very special group of people. They will be honored for their courage, commitment, and compassion. The past few months have placed extraordinary demands on everyone’s strength and fortitude, but possibly nowhere have these demands been greater than on the staff of the Jewish Home Family.

The 40-minute program will include a virtual journal and the premier of “Smiling Behind Our Masks,” a film produced by filmmaker Jennie Schweitzer Bell. It is an emotional, compelling, heart-warming look at people who come to work every day, overcoming child care issues, personal illness, and even family loss, knowing how vital it is to care for the most vulnerable and those unable to care for themselves.

Ms. Schweitzer is a New York-based producer and director and a graduate of NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts. Her short documentaries have premiered with the New York Times, the New Yorker, the Atlantic, and National Geographic.
