Free speech therapy

Free speech therapy

Your cover story on special needs prompts me to write about one “special need” category: stuttering. Parents with children in Jewish schools should be aware that free speech therapy is available for their child, thanks to a 40-year-old federal law. The website of The Stuttering Foundation of America (www.stutteringhelp.org) has a brochure called “Special Education Law and Children Who Stutter” that explains to parents this amazing benefit of free speech therapy, which can begin in pre-school and run throughout high school. It also offers a host of free resources for children, adults and parents, including streaming videos, downloadable brochures, a national directory of qualified speech therapists, and more. For Jewish families, there are two important websites that come to mind – the Jewish Stuttering Association (www.jstutter.org) and the Israeli Stuttering Association (www.ambi.org.il).
