Temple B’nai Abraham in Livingston offers “Folk Shabbat: Songs of Endurance and Resilience,” with Cantor Jessica F. Epstein and guitarist/musician Bob Mellman, on Friday, January 22, at 6:30 p.m. It will be broadcast on the synagogue’s Facebook page.
The service will feature traditional prayers and melodies interspersed with music by American singer/songwriters including Bob Dylan, Lisa Gutkin of the Klezmatics, John Prine, the Carter family, and Steven Foster. The music — both traditional folk songs and newer compositions — can offer inspiration during these challenging times.
Bass guitarist Bob Mellman’s musical compositions have been heard on National Public Radio, commercials, and even on the Dr. Demento radio show. He sings with the Reticents, a band that specializes in the songs of Bob Dylan. Cantor Epstein is one of his guitar students. For information, go to tbanj.org.
