Fair Lawn congregation plans Torah donation to Rutherford shul
Congregation B’nai Sholom/Fair Lawn Jewish Center will donate a Torah to Congregation Beth El of Rutherford/Chabad of the Meadowlands. The ceremony is set for Sunday, September 6, at 11 a.m., at Felician Education Commons, 227 Montross Ave., in Rutherford. Parking is available across the street
After Temple Beth Sholom and the Fair Lawn Jewish Center merged and the new synagogue had enough sifre Torah to be able to donate one, it set up a Torah rededication project, which allows it to share its good fortune with the larger Jewish world.
On August 8, 2025, Temple Beth El’s synagogue building, which was home to seven Torah scrolls, was completely destroyed in a fire. Fortunately, the congregation was able to establish temporary quarters across the street from their location by renting space form Felician University. CBS/FLJC reached out to Rabbi Yitzchok Lerman at Congregation Beth El/Chabad of the Meadowlands to offer help. The Torah will arrive in its new home in time for the High Holidays.
The community is welcome as the sefer Torah moves from one shul to the other. The morning includes brunch and children’s entertainment. Donations from Gerry and Howard Kessel, Amy Golden, Esther and Stuart Rubinstein, and Joan and Ira Kastrinsky, helped to fund the program.
