The Kaplen JCC on the Palisades has extended the deadline for applications for the Joseph Taub Scholar Athlete award to October 22. The award goes to high school senior student-athletes who demonstrate exceptional academic ability and strong leadership skills in sports, their schools, and their communities.
Bergen County high school seniors can apply. They do not have to be JCC members to apply or to win. Winners will be notified in early November. First place winners, one male and one female, each will receive a $3,600 scholarship; the second place prize $900; third place is $540.
All winners will be recognized and honored at the JCC’s second annual Sports Night of Champions, on Thursday, November 29. The community fundraising evening will feature sports celebrities Ron Darling and Tino Martinez as keynote speakers; it supports scholarships for children, families in need, and seniors who benefit from JCC programs and services.
As part of the application process, students will be asked to submit a 500- to 750-word personal essay, two letters of recommendation, and their most recent high school transcript. For more information, go to www.jccotp.org/athleteawards.
The Joseph Taub Scholar Athlete Award has been established in memory of Joseph Taub, a JCC founding member and former co-owner of the New Jersey Nets and a founder of Automatic Data Processing, who dedicated his time and resources to supporting underserved young people in the area of athletics. An avid philanthropist, he made dreams of a better life possible for countless teenagers by providing scholarship assistance and creating a successful after-school basketball league as a safe haven for students in the Paterson public school district, where he grew up.
