Board members of the Bergen County section of the National Council of Jewish Women, volunteers, customers, and friends gathered on June 24 for a ribbon-cutting ceremony and relaunch of the transformed Council Resale Shop. After an extensive renovation, the store, at 75 South Washington Ave. in Bergenfield, is now light, bright, airy, and filled with new and nearly new clothing and gifts, pictures, home goods, Judaica, and more, all at startlingly low prices.

Rabbi Steven Sirbu of Temple Emeth in Teaneck and Rabbi Jordan Millstein of Temple Sinai of Bergen County in Tenafly hung mezuzot on both door lintels. Their blessings included words of praise for NCJW Bergen County Section’s tzedakah (righteousness and charity) and observance of bal tashchit (do not destroy or waste), a basic ethical principle in Jewish law.

A plaque was presented to Sherry Bloom and her philanthropic family, long-time Resale Shop supporters, and the NCJW BCS Outstanding Media Award was given to Beth Chananie, Jewish Standard’s community editor and NCJWBCS member, in recognition of the exceptional media coverage she gives to the organization.

The Council Resale Shop (formerly known as Council Thrift Shop) opened in Hackensack in 1950 and moved to Bergenfield in 2003. It is run by a manager and assistant and some 15 NCJW dedicated volunteers. The shop gives back in many ways. Donors contribute items they no longer need, so it can become another person’s treasure. The store often contributes clothing and home utensils to people in need after such disasters as fires, earthquakes and floods.

To donate, shop, or volunteer at the shop, go to www.ncjwbcs.org/thrift-shop.html. Pickups can be arranged. Store hours are Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday 10:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m.; Thursday until 7 p.m.; and Saturday until 5 p.m.; and closed Sunday and Monday.
