Correction
A letter-writer last week wrote that “a rabbi cannot perform a legal [gay marriage] ceremony recognized by the State of New York.”
Avi Smolen and Justin Rosen procured a civil marriage from Connecticut before any ceremony was performed in New York State. New York State does recognize same-sex marriages that are originated in other states where they are permitted through reciprocity. And it is legal in New York to perform a ceremony for what has already been established elsewhere.
