Rabbi Bentzion Butman, Cambodia’s first rabbi, discusses his struggles and and triumphs in establishing the first Jewish community there, on Zoom, for Chabad of Hackensack. Rabbi Butman, the co-director of Chabad in Cambodia, will tell his story, about a Chabad couple leaving their comfortable life in Israel to move to Phnom Penh. The talk is scheduled for Monday, November 23, at 8 p.m.
“For a Jew, life in Cambodia can be quite challenging,” Rabbi Mendy Kaminker of Chabad of Hackensack said. “Kosher food needs to be exported from other countries, and Jewish education is also not available.”
Rabbi Butman will discuss the challenges and the progress of the Jewish community in Cambodia and how he formed a unique relationship with the Cambodian royal family; one of its member celebrated becoming a bat mitzvah.
